Our STORY
The Ballard, Greenwood, and Phinney communities built, supported, and sustained the Norse Home for decades. When the organization faced financial challenges, the board sought help and entered into an “affiliation agreement” with Transforming Age. They announced they were there to update the building and improve things for residents.
However, just three short years later, Transforming Age informed all 86 residents that they would need to move out. Shock, sadness, and panic followed once the full implications of this announcement became clear.
As of June 2025, all residents, families, and staff are gone. The building now sits empty...once vibrant, now silent. This all occurred largely under the radar. The very community that built the Norse Home did not know, and still does not fully know, what really happened.
In the same month residents were told to leave, a site plan filed with the City of Seattle revealed the real plan: 32 luxury apartments for Independent seniors only and buy-ins ranging from $500,000 to $1,000,000!
Those 110 affordable housing units? Gone.
Assisted living? Gone.
This is a fight to get the Norse Home back and return it to the purpose it was built for!
Our Heritage
The Norse Home property was purchased in 1938 by the Sons of Norway. It is an incredibly valuable site located atop Phinney Ridge, with sweeping mountain and city views. It was built up thanks to many community members who contributed generously and volunteered their time and efforts.
The Norse Home opened its doors in 1957 and served as a real home for thousands of seniors for nearly 68 years. It earned a reputation for being affordable and compassionate—serving independent seniors, assisted-living residents, and, when personal funds were exhausted, residents on Medicaid. It was truly a home with a heart.
