SAVE NORSE HOME FAQs
The Sons of Norway played a central role in the history of The Norse Home, purchasing the property in 1938 for $8,000. Membership fundraising supported construction of the facility, which opened in 1957 as Norse Home, Inc.In September 2021, the seven-member Norse Home Board entered into an Affiliation Agreement with Transforming Age. This agreement has not been made publicly available.Site plans filed in 2024 with the City of Seattle, Transforming Age identified itself as the property owner. To date, the Save Norse Home Committee has not identified publicly available documents evidencing a transfer of ownership.
IRS Form 990 filings list board members for the years 2020 and 2021, which include the period during which the Affiliation Agreement was executed. These filings are public records.
Transforming Age stated publicly that Norse Home closed to allow for necessary renovations. However, site plans submitted to the City of Seattle indicate a redevelopment proposal that would reduce the number of residential units from approximately 110 to approximately 32. The committee believes this represents a significant departure from the property’s historic use as affordable seniorhousing.
According to statements made at a September 2024 meeting, residents were informed that all remaining residents would need to relocate by June 2025.
The committee understands that the final resident relocated in April 2025.
The committee is composed of community members, including lifetime Sons of Norway members, former volunteers, family members of residents, and local business owners.
The mission of the Save Norse Home Committee is to advocate for legal, regulatory, and community-based remedies to restore the Norse Home to community-led affordable senior housing, including independent and assisted care services.
Affordable senior housing remains in crisis throughout Seattle and the Puget Sound region. The loss of Norse Home reduced access to affordable housing with caregiving services for current and future residents.
